Takashi Kono (1906-1999) led Japanese graphic design from 1930. Not only in illustration and poster graphics, he was very active in many fields such as movie set, theater stage set, fashion critic. We collect his various work from before WW2 and pass down his achievements as a designer, who’s like none other, to the next generation throughout books and websites.

ABOUT

Takashi Kono (1906-1999) led Japanese graphic design from 1930. His work influenced Yusaku Kamekura, Yoshio Hayakawa and Masayoshi Nakajo. He is known as one of inventors to cultivate modern Japanese graphic design. Now we’ve been collecting work of Takashi Kono and making it an achieve. BIOGRAPHY

Takashi Kono(1906-1999)

Born in Tokyo. Graduated from Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts (the present Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music) in 1929, his early works including posters, advertisement, costume and set design for play and movies (Tsukiji Little Theatre, Shochiku Kinema film company). Participated Nippon Kobo from ’34 to ’39 as art director, founded his own studio in ’36, established DESKA in ’59, worked for book design, magazine covers, packaging, advertisement, stage set, display, textile and monumental design. Taught design at Musashino University, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, Joshibi University of Art and Design, and Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music where he later served as president. Lectured at the Ulm School of Design in ’63. Became the Japanese AGI president in Milano’61. Presiding judge at the International Warsaw Poster Biennale in ’68. Was appointed a Royal Designer for Industry (Gr.Br.) in ’83, and the Hall of Fame for Tokyo Art Directors Club in ’86. Had One-man exhibition in ’41, ’67, and the posthumous one was held at Ginza Graphic Gallery (GGG) in 2003 and The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in 2005. Published ‘Package Design’ in ’54, and ‘Takashi Kono My Momentum’ in ’83.
